Penni Layne & the Wonder Boys is an R&B/Soul band that has been many years in the making and led by vocalist Penni Layne and bassist Larry Jackson.
Penni, originally from Virginia, with summertime’s spent in South Carolina, spent her childhood sprawled out on her bedroom floor, listening to vinyl LP’s and learning from the masters. She began her professional music career as a teen performing all over the DC area at such places as the White House, the Pentagon, and Mt Vernon. Once accepted to Berklee College of Music, she moved north and continued (and continues!) to add to her musical career, having the pleasure her whole adult life, of playing with amazing musicians from truly every musical style. With every performance, singing “from her soul” is what appeals to her most, vocally. It is also why she wanted to start this original project, to craft songs and perform music that speaks thru her.
Larry, hailing from Las Vegas, was inclined to jazz greats; being taught by those who performed with the stars of the Vegas strip. As a teen, he quickly rose to being an “in demand” artist in Nevada. He, too, went to Berklee College and so, made the trek East. It was during those college years that he made connections and had the opportunity to perform with many musicians well known in the music industry today. Gaining experience and honing his craft over the years, he is a versatile bassist in every genre and still just as in demand as he was back in Vegas. He is also a band leader, music businessman, songwriter and performer.
Bringing their musical expertise together, in writing and producing their own material, their goal is to recreate soulful vocals, catchy choruses and horn lines reminiscent of the sound of the 60’s but still keeping their inspiration fresh. And “because they can”, for their live performances, they’ll always throw in a few cover tunes~with a PLWB “twist”, paying homage to those who paved the way before them.
