The song has been waiting many years to be born and I am so glad it’s finally arrived! It was written originally over just an acoustic bass line until our ensemble breathed another vision for it. The poetry/lyrics are definitely an homage in the Kurt Elling style of writing - a trumpet like vocal to accompany a true trumpet - wistful and nostalgic for the romance of the summer knowing that autumn will come and possibly change not only the leaves but the relationship as well.

Dubbed the “barn burner” of our live set we felt the need to write a quintessential soul tune reminiscent of the ‘60’s classic hits for this one. The lyrics and music came rather quickly once the concept of stealing someone’s heart was established. We knew the rhythm section needed to be solid and subtle to get that feel and timelessness of the Motown sound and yet relevant to todays listeners. Once the instrumental tracks were laid down and the lead vocals, we had a ball creating those multi tracked girl group backing vocals. Alan Evans (of SoulLive) did the mixing & mastering for “The Thief” and we think his knowledge and expertise of the R&B / Soul genre have really given the song the edge it needed to make it truly special.
